Shanghai Renji Hospital

Founded in 1844, Renji Hospital is the first Western medicine hospital in Shanghai after it became a treaty port. The hospital now comprises four campuses (East, West, North, and South) and the Shanghai Cancer Institute. It is a comprehensive Grade III Class A hospital that integrates medical care, teaching, and research.

The East Campus is located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong, completed and operational since October 1999. The West Campus is in the Central Business District of Huangpu District, adjacent to the Bund. The South Campus, located in Pujiang Town, Minhang District, was completed in December 2012 and fully integrated into Renji Hospital in October 2020. The North Campus, at the intersection of Juye Road and Lingshan Road, became fully operational in July 2013. The Shanghai Cancer Institute, on Xietu Road, officially merged with Renji Hospital in October 2010, forming a unified "institute-hospital" system.

Since its establishment, Renji Hospital has boasted two Chinese Academy of Engineering academicians. By the end of 2023, the hospital had 4,780 full-time employees, including 714 senior and associate senior experts, 177 doctoral supervisors, and 208 master supervisors.

The four campuses have a total of 2,750 approved beds and 54 clinical departments. In 2023, the hospital completed 6.4364 million outpatient and emergency visits, discharged 215,800 patients, performed 105,200 inpatient surgeries (31,500 fourth-level surgeries, 31,000 minimally invasive surgeries, and 41,100 day surgeries), with an average hospital stay of 5.23 days and a drug expenditure ratio of 24.43%.

The hospital is equipped with advanced medical equipment, including dual-source photon-counting CT, PET-CT, PET-MR, and Da Vinci surgical robots. It has 13 national clinical key specialties, such as Gastroenterology, Obstetrics, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, and General Surgery. Additionally, it has a flagship department for integrated Chinese and Western medicine (Nephrology Department) under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Research projects and patents have increased year-on-year, including key research and development projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (major, key, and innovative research groups). In 2023, the hospital secured 492 projects with a total funding of 212,270,753 yuan, surpassing 100 million yuan for 11 consecutive years. Among these, 161 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The hospital published 712 SCIE-indexed papers, including 111 with an impact factor greater than 10, and the highest single impact factor was 56.3. In 2022, the hospital ranked second nationally in Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FC) (27th globally) and second nationally in Article Count (AC) (54th globally).

In 2010, the hospital became one of the first standardized training bases for resident physicians in Shanghai. In 2014, it became a national standardized training base for resident physicians. The Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine, the first Sino-foreign cooperative education project approved by the Ministry of Education, was established in 2014. The Sino-French College of Surgery was founded in 2019, and the clinical medicine undergraduate program was accredited by the Ministry of Education.

The hospital has promoted the construction of a close medical consortium, managing several branch hospitals in Shanghai and other regions, including Renji Hospital Jiading Branch, Renji Hospital Baoshan Branch, Renji Hospital Minhang Branch, and Renji Hospital Punan Branch. It also manages Renji Hospital Ningbo Branch and Renji Hospital Nantong Branch, and collaborates with the Second People's Hospital of Anhui Province to build the "National Medical Center for Digestive Diseases."

Renji Hospital remains committed to its public welfare mission and social responsibilities. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it sent over 400 medical personnel to various regions like Wuhan, Beijing, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Tibet, Sanya, Chengdu, Shanxi, and Chongqing to assist in epidemic control. Since 2017, the hospital has repeatedly dispatched staff to Tibet, Xinjiang, Yunnan, Morocco, and Laos for targeted support missions.
