Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a century-old hospital in Shanghai. It is a third-class A general Chinese medicine hospital, a research-oriented Chinese medicine hospital jointly built by the provincial and ministerial levels. It is among the top ten general hospitals in Shanghai, a national demonstration Chinese medicine hospital and a national civilized unit. From 1984 to 2018, it continuously held the title of "Civilized Unit in Shanghai" for 18 times (the only one in the Shanghai health system), and has repeatedly won the honor of being an advanced collective in the national health system and the title of an advanced unit in national hospital culture construction. In 2001, it became the first Chinese medicine hospital in China to pass the ISO9001 quality management system certification. Since 2010, the hospital has received Grade A in the performance evaluation of the directors of municipal hospitals by Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center for 7 times.
The hospital has East and West branches, with 1,200 approved beds and 1,320 open beds. In 2018, all the business and efficiency indicators of the hospital ranked among the top of the third-class A general hospitals in the city.
The hospital has remarkable characteristics and outstanding advantages in traditional Chinese medicine. It currently has 3 key disciplines of the Ministry of Education: Orthopedics and Traumatology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Chinese Materia Medica (Chinese Medicine Preparation, Clinical Pharmacology of Chinese Medicine). There are 9 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 6 key clinical specialties of the Health Commission and 14 key specialties of the Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The emergency department of traditional Chinese medicine is an emergency base of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The preparation room is a national base for the preparation and reform of traditional Chinese medicine, and the neurology department is a stroke prevention and treatment base of the Health Commission.
The specialized diseases and departments set up by the hospital have their own characteristics, are unique and enjoy a high reputation throughout the country. In recent years, the hospital has been strengthening the construction of the connotation of traditional Chinese medicine, earnestly inheriting the academic thoughts of famous and senior traditional Chinese medicine experts. It has established 2 national inheritance studios for famous traditional Chinese medicine doctors, 9 national inheritance studios for famous and senior traditional Chinese medicine experts and 22 Shanghai inheritance studios for the academic experience of famous and senior traditional Chinese medicine.
The hospital has several intensive care units, advanced medical facilities and complete departments of internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics. In 2012, the Reproductive Medicine Center of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine was established, and the obstetrics department was restored in 2014. It has strong comprehensive treatment capabilities and has become one of the six key units in Shanghai's public health prevention and control system and one of the three emergency centers in Pudong area. The hospital currently has a total of 2,055 employees, including 144 with senior professional titles, 15 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, 70 person-times selected for national talent training programs, and more than 100 experts serving as vice chairmen or above in national and Shanghai professional medical associations. The hospital aims to build a research-oriented hospital. It currently has 5 university-level research institutes, 9 hospital-level research institutes and 5 third-level laboratories for traditional Chinese medicine research. The Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education - the Laboratory of Liver and Kidney Diseases jointly built by the provincial and ministerial levels has been established. It has an internationally standard Phase I drug clinical trial ward and has completed the first clinical trial project in China commissioned by the World Health Organization. The annual approved scientific research funds are about 150 million yuan. In 2018, it won the title of "Shanghai Patent Demonstration Unit".
